Loughborough Students miss on a second consecutive BUCS gold
Loughborough Students Futsal Club BUCS 1s, including many IFA players and coaches, travelled down to the Copper Box Arena in the London 2012 Olympic Park on the 10th May to play Cardiff University in the BUCS Final, with hopes of making history in a fantastic sporting arena which hosted events such as Handball in the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012. No university team had ever retained the BUCS Futsal Championship, so they were on the edge of glory. 20 or so Loughborough loyal supporters accompanied the squad down to the game with the spirits and expectations high.
The game was a frustrating one, with Cardiff dealing with Loughborough early pressure. Despite this, the lads managed to get to half time with the score 2-2 – it was all to play for. As the second half continued the tension grew and with Cardiff managing to hold on in the last few minutes penalties were inevitable with the score at 4-4. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for the lads in Purple on the day who were unlucky and probably deserved more out of the game.
It was a sombre occasion in the end, with most of the lads realising this was their chance to make history however this leaves a space open for the future stars of Loughborough Students Futsal Club to write their names in the history books.
Loughborough remain the only University to have won BUSA/BUCS in 3 occasions, and have reached 4 out of the last 5 BUCS Futsal Championship finals
